“The Way progresses by returning.

What is Light?

Approximate shape of a photon.

“That which comes from the Light of the Holy Ghost is of only one species…but that which comes from the Light of Nature is of two species.”

Theophrastus Paracelsus (1493-1541)

Light has been a source of wonder and study since antiquity, with ample degrees of interpretation and comprehension, nevertheless, physically speaking light can only come from two types of genesis: incandescence and luminescence.

The Light of the Holy Ghost

” O friendly reader, while you enjoy mortal light, aspire to that eternal one.”

Light can be like a wave or particle.

These two mechanisms to produce light will determine its properties and intrinsic characteristics, regardless of how similar these appear to be in color temperature. ¹ Understanding this is in full indispensable to develop appropriate technology, as both kinds of light serve unique applications that can fulfil different purposes. ²

Incandescent photonic genesis happens by the transition from low to higher energy levels, through classical mechanics.

Luminescent photonic genesis happens by a quantum transition in energy from higher to lower energy levels.

The light of the celestial bodies

Natural incandescence comes from the Sun and the celestial bodies.

Cueva de las manos

Artificial incandescence comes from fire and incandescent bulbs. They are named artificial because its light that can be made at will.

Natural luminescence comes from creatures like fireflies and also from atmospheric phenomena like auroras and will-o’-the-wisps.

Artificial luminescence comes from compact fluorescent tubes and light emitting semiconductors.

Incandescent photon genesis is physically the most efficient method to produce light in the universe, emitting more photons by the same amount of energy than luminescence, but not all are visible. On the other hand, luminescent photon genesis emits less photons than incandescence, but more of these photons are in the visible range, this is measured in lumens, which is not the same as total photon output.

“Appearances are a glimpse of the unseen.”

– Anaxagoras

The arrival of the electricity revolutionized our way of life, but the first electric light bulb made was still a continuation of the same type of light we have seen since the dawn of mankind. It was the arrival of the electro-luminescent bulb which made a type of light we rarely seen before, which was the real change, and today we are surrounded by this type of light, especially by the interface to our modern day indispensable tool, the computer.

Without looking out the window
one can see the Way of Heaven.

– The Tao, Verse 47

Light can be diametrically opposed in many ways, such as being able to travel as a wave or a particle, or be produced by incandescence or luminescence, a good analogy to visualize this property would be in the way of how heat is produced by a classic oven, to a microwave oven. Both ovens produce heat, just as both bulbs produce light, but the classic oven heats from the outside to the inside, while the microwave oven in the other direction, from the inside to the outside. Both produce heat, just as both types of photon genesis mechanisms produce light, yet the way to do it is the heart of the matter at hand.

“Light is the principal person in a painting.”

– Edouard Manet

Incandescent and luminescent light sources have their own special uses and excel in certain areas, for example incandescence is the undisputed king for high fidelity faithful chromatic illumination, thanks to its broadband continuous spectrum and high-photonic entropy. Incandescent light is inherently high-entropy, while luminescent light is low-entropy, both types of light sources are very useful and have their specific properties, providing for different technological and artistic purposes.

Incandescent light has some of the highest entropy in the universe.

Luminescent light such as from semiconductors, can have some of the lowest entropy in the universe.

On the other hand, luminescence suppresses large portions of the light spectrum, and so this light is really just a superposition of a handful of frequencies, that may appear white, but in reality have real spectral voids where there is no light. Nevertheless, luminescent light sources from ultra low-entropy solid-state semiconductors, are the ideal light medium for digital information transmission, indispensable for the fiber-optic digital tele-communications infrastructure, and other digital technologies.

SpectrumView state-of-the-art computer monitors make possible a form of analog time dilation from the high-entropy light experienced.

Analog signals are high in entropy because are made of eddies of complexity, while low entopy digital signals are synthesized as on/off bits, both have their unique applications and purposes.

Frontier computing can experience a form of digital time dilation thanks to its its ultra low-entropy light.

“The medium is the message.”

– Marshall McLuhan

What is Entropy?

Entropy of light = novelty in its photons.

Entropy is the amount and range of variations and unexpectedness in a signal or phenomena. Light is low-entropy when there is less randomness and more predictability in its photon variations, like their phase, frequency, mode, etc. Its called ordered light because its more or less predictable, on the other hand high-entropy light is random and unpredictable in its photon variations.

Entropy is the measure of novelty.

“Information without entropy is death.”

– Claude Shannon

Entropy is novelty, but not disorder, because order is subjective in a universal sense, but novelty is not subjective. For example a low-entropy field growing a single type of plant may appear ordered, but to the endemic plants living there before, that order may be a disorder. Another example of this subjectivity would be like an inhabited house as opposed to an abandoned one, the inhabited has higher entropy, yet it appears ordered. Its higher in entropy because there are more unexpected events and variations happening constantly, on the other hand, the abandoned one appears disordered yet has lower entropy, because there are much less unexpected events happening, and will continue to decrease in entropy over time, as it further degrades, becoming ever more predictable with lesser range of variations.

Photomodulation

“Penetrating red light is possibly the fundamental anti-stress factor for all organisms.”

– Ray Peat

Semiconductors are a genuine marvel of our age, and provide indispensable and very useful technological applications to our modern ways, their ability to transmit digital information and be transformed into solar cells is worthy of praise and reverence, however when it comes to producing light for our prolonged consumption, use such as in a computer monitor, its synthetic photonic nature is simply second class to our analog biology, and can provoke cell degeneration through photo-chemical reactions in the eye tissue,¹ causing ocular harm, ²  and negatively disrupting the pineal gland, ³  which produces neuro-protecting hormones such as melatonin, serotonin, and pinoline. ⁴

light waves

On the other hand, infrared light frequencies penetrate deep in the tissue and regenerates optic cells, reduces ocular inflammation, alleviates photo sensitiveness, improves blood circulation to the brain, enhances cognitive function and memory formation, through infrared photo-biomodulation. SpectrumView monitors are naturally rich in this infrared light, something completely lacking in common monitors.

Copper wiring and strong copper mounts, detachable for transportation or to suspend in front of a window for natural day backlight. The incandescent light bulbs are standard Edison base, size and wattage for household appliances such as ovens, and are not banned since they are not used for general space illumination. The lightbox is also the ideal cured meat and fruit dehydrator when placed faced down, with a soft continuously circulating airflow and precise infrared radiation control with little interior heat.

SpectrumView electro-incandescent lightbox

The lightbox can also be used as the ideal cured meats and fruit dehydrator, when faced down.

Japanese woddworking

Japanese precision woodwork and thick frame with detachable strong copper stands and genuine lac varnished grips.

Sustainably hand-made with handtools.

Everything works with either 120V or 240V at the flick of an inner switch without having to change all bulbs, which means you can use 120V bulbs in a 240V country, twice as many replacement bulbs are included, which should last for many years if well treated. Using only incandescent bulbs at full intensity for the whole day will increase your electric bill, but if used during winter the proportional thermal energy radiated will be subtracted from your heating bill, so cost will cancel out, and if natural lit during the summer, the electricity usage will stay the same as well. Frontier research in nanophotonics and thermophotovoltaics will make incandescent backlights more available for mobile screens and monitors in the future.
